Sugar is far out one of the worst things you can put in your body. It ages your skin, makes you store fat, wrecks your energy levels, suppresses your immune system, and nourishes bacteria, fungi, and parasites. In addition, the concentrated, fast burning calories in sugar short-circuit your body’s normal appetite control mechanisms, meaning you can consume far more calories in the form of sugar than you ever could from natural whole foods. It’s easy to eat 2000 calories worth of sugary candy in a sitting (about a one lbs. bag). Can you imagine eating 2000 calories worth of tuna (8 cans of tuna) or Yogurt (about 5lbs of full fat yogurt) or beans (seven cans of beans). You simply couldn’t do it.
In addition, sugar gives you a quick emotional and energy high, followed by a steep crash. As a result of this, eating sugar becomes addictive. This effect is most profound when sugar is eaten alone without other nutrients - as in sugar candy. If you want a sugar fix, try fruit. If you need to indulge in some real junk food now and then, reach for some high quality dark chocolate, full fat ice cream, cheesecake, or other custards or cakes made with eggs, milk, and/or cream. All of these dessert foods deliver some real nutrition in addition to sugar, which lessens the impact of sugar on your blood chemistry, reducing some of the harmful effects.
2. White Bread
White bread comes right after sugar in the lineup of toxic foods. White flour is rapidly converted into sugar in your body, and has all of the deleterious effects that sugar has. Whole grain breads (and pastas) are a better choice, but most of these are still over-processed, and really aren’t health foods. Spouted grains, stone ground grains, and dark rye are the best types of bread.
3. Fast Food in General
Fast food is really an oxymoron. Food is something that nourishes the body and promotes health. Fast food tears down health. Have you seen Super Size Me? In less than a month a diet of exclusively fast food is enough to leave a formerly healthy man a physical and emotional wreck. Fast foods combine the worst elements of every food group – white flour, sugar, highly processed meats from unhealthy animals raised on unnatural feeds, unhealthy cooking oils, and preservatives and other artificial chemicals.
4. Snack Chips
Snack chips are generally made from white flour, with all of the health issues that come with that. In addition, most are full of trans fats, preservatives, food dyes, and other artificial chemicals that hammer your liver and kidneys. Like fast foods, snack chips are non-foods which take far more out of your body than they put in, contributing to low energy levels, poor heart health, weight gain, and a host of other problems. The highly reffined potato starch in potato chips isn't much better than white flour.
5. Boxed and Bagged Baked Goods
The boxed and bagged cookies, crackers, snack cakes, and doughnuts available on most grocery store shelves are crammed full of sugar, white flour, trans fats, and artificial chemicals. They are horrible for your health, and, in addition, they really don’t taste that good. Fresh baked goods will generally be better for you (they’re less likely to contain trans fats and preservatives) but are still low quality foods. Again, dark chocolate, full fat ice cream, custards made with eggs and butter, and other desserts that aren’t made with white flour are better choices. Fruit is, of course the best desert choice. Try topping berries with full fat yogurt or even organic cream for a more natural, healthy dessert alternative.
